Fed up of useless companies. - 15/12/2008 20:37:02 Today I was at a company in Godalming (a nearby town) and was given a list of tasks. One task required me to test my laptop direct into their broadband line as part of an attempt (successful one too!) to track down a problem with staying connected to internet banking and most secure sites. But when I came to plug their main router back in, it seemed to have died. It refused to connect. The router was an overpriced piece of junk (Draytek) so the diagnostic lights on the router were totally useless. The company I had taken over from had passworded the interface so I was unable to tap in and view real status information about the problem connecting. The company had also failed to document the router password or any setup information. In the end we opted to reset the router to factory settings. This also did not fix the problem. So faulty router! Found another router and set it up.. But for some reason new email fails to come through. The correct ports are open and telnet delivery to the adsl IP works. I look at the MX record for the domain which seems to be set to the mailservers of the previous support company. In the end we track down that the destination after the support company is a spam filtering company. We call the spam filtering company who tells us to go away and call the reseller. We call the number registered to the MX record and are told that they do not support the company and that we would need to contact THEIR reseller! He could give me the company name but not the phone number. After googling for the new company I find they have the same website and are in the same building! Wth. Why couldn't they give me the number or even just transfer me. I call that 3rd company who refuses to help because of a billing dispute. Fine! Lets change the MX records away from the squabbling and unhelpful companies and direct to the company's adsl line. I call up Demon who host their domains but they claim they need a fax with the request. A fax is produced, signed and sent through. I call up again to confirm they got the fax at around 2pm. They claim the update will be done at 6pm. It is now 8.30pm, demon are closed and did not do the change. So all in all a bunch of fail spawned from to many stupid resellers and money grabbing companies. Keep it simple, keep it direct. Don't pick shabby companies who only do dns changes manually by fax! And then fail to have 24 hour support. Some companies (and expensive ones at that) in this country really do live in the dark ages when it comes to customer support. Especially business support!
